Ok, now for an overdue summary of the second part of day one.
Looked through the photos for sale for autograph purchases - there was only one of Kavan and I debated for a little while getting another autograph from him, but decided to, since photos were cheap and autographs were part of the gold package. There were a lot of good ones for Jason and David (wound up buying one of Jason and JF for Chevron) and decided to have David sign my cover of ADB. I also picked out a good one of Rachel (my criticism - most of the photos for sale were a little pin-uppish).
pavaneofstars and I headed across the street to Del Taco for a quick bite. For the uninitiated, it's the lovechild of Taco Bell and McDonald's - you get fries with your taco.
Kavan Smith I'd seen photos of Kavan at recent cons and was a little disappointed that the scruff was gone, but he was wearing the white fleece jacket. Kavan started off by asking if there were kids in the audience and appeared enthusiastic when it looked like there weren't and he wouldn't have to censor himself too much. He started off by telling the story of the X-rated episode of 'The Outer Limits' episode he did with Alyssa Milano. I'd heard the story before but hadn't heard that he told his agent to ask for a lot of money since he was reluctant to do the nude scene and figured they wouldn't pay. Apparently the producers really wanted a nude scene.
There were a few questions about pranks/mishaps on sets and Kavan wound up telling several stories of things going wrong in his theater experience either to him or co-stars. My impression is that he misses the theater, or at least would love the chance to do a play or something similar. He did tell about seeing a performance of Cyrano and being absolutely spellbound on the edge of his seat and realizing that everyone else was too. Someone asked about what other roles/shows he'd like to do and he commented he wouldn't mind doing period pieces like 'The Tudors' because he likes period pieces "and my wife might actually watch me."
He did repeat that he and DH are 'friendly' because their wives are friends, but he likes picking on DH. He was asked something to the effect of describing his castmates and he commented 'Rachel is sweet, Jason's a big guy, he always learns something about economics from Joe and David's a bitch.' He told the story of filming S&R and how the set would shake, knocking stuff loose and DH complaining "My eye, my eye." Someone asked if we should greet DH with this when he spoke.
Someone asked Kavan about his name. (I assumed it was some variation of Kevin). Apparently his mom like Kavanaugh - something to make up for Smith as a last name and his father's name was out of the question (someone asked what it was and Kavan wouldn't say), but they thought it was a little too pretentious and shortened it to Kavan, so he has to deal with people asking about pronouncing (and mispronouncing) it.
Autographs A short time later stood in line for autographs - Kavan, Dan Shea and Rachel were all signing as was Alexis, although he was not included included with the ticket price. Oh well, I'll see him at Chevron. Kavan remembered me from Peg3 and made some comment about how long ago that was. I nodded and added London was fun. Kavan then made some remark about having been invited back for P4. Rachel in person is gorgeous and tiny. I made some stupid comment about Calif. winter weather with regards to the tank top and scarf she had on.
Cabaret The cabaret was Alexis and Dan Shea. More stories of life on the set from Dan and three separate sketches from Alexis. The second one had me ready to bawl. Let's just say he can act and he's quite versatile.
Dessert Party After some debate I decided to get a little dressed up for the dessert party and put on a white shirt, cufflinks, and a black velvet blazer with jeans. I may pack this for Chevron if I have room. Looking around, some people dressed up, some didn't. I grabbed a beer from the bar since I didn't know if they'd alcohol at the party (and was glad I did - not good beer selection) and pavaneofstars and I wound up at a table with mostly Firefly/Serenity fans (I think they outnumbered the SG fans about 2:1). There was good dessert selection - ice cream, petit fours, tiramasu, and cheesecake. Pavane and I channeled JM and took pictures of our desserts. The guests were briefly introduced with about 15 seconds to take pictures. Ron Glass (from Firefly) was the first to come by our table and apologized for not sitting down. I think the guests had literally 2 minutes per table, which was a little disappointing. Kavan came by and talked about having a bad experience with a table of only Firefly people and talked briefly about his NZ con experience.
Jewel came by and she's quite blond (similar to ComiCon) and really sweet. She seemed a little surprised that she hadn't been asked to also speak on Sunday with DH (especially given that 'Brainstorm' had just aired). She talked about seeing Nathan F and then she was off to the LA Ink tattoo studio to get a previous tattoo re-done by Hannah, who apparently is a fan of hers. Jewel said the tattoo is about the size of her hand and was a mistake when she was younger. Someone asked if there was chance she's be on the "LA Ink" show, but Jewel said her tattoo was quite low on her back. At this point it was close to midnight and pavane and I left before Dan Shea came by.
